Figures are estimates supplied by Metals Consulting International for year 2012.

Steel Demand by Consuming End-Use Industry

Demand estimates by sector are indicative of global 2012 finished steel demand. Construction includes structural and building work. Mechanical engineering includes machinery & equipment and components. Other transport includes shipbuilding, rail, heavy vehicles. Metal goods include furniture, fasteners, wire products, containers, boxes. Tubes include welded and seamless. Figures are MCI estimates of steel end-use by application for year 2012 world steel consumption.

Demand by Quality

Figures are MCI estimates of finished steel consumption by grade for 2012. Engineering steels are often also referred to as SBQ steels (special bar quality steel); these are steels that typically move or rotate whilst in use.

Demand Forecast

Figures to 2012 are consistent with World Steel Association [worldsteel] assessments dated April 2013. 2013 and 2014 figures are also worldsteel estimates. 2015 figure is MCI estimate. All figures are millions of metric tonnes of finished steel.
